On February 14, 2025, the Demopolis City Schools Child Nutrition Program Staff enjoyed an educational field trip to Underground Forest Farms in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The staff learned about the fascinating mushroom cultivation process, starting from building blocks made of soybean husks and wood pellets. These blocks are prepared and sterilized before being inoculated with spores. The tour also included a visit to another farm located in the basement of a building, where mushrooms are grown in coolers, harvested, weighed, and distributed to local customers. Following the tour, the staff enjoyed a delicious lunch at Rolf's Deli and Sausages, which sources fresh mushrooms directly from Underground Forest Farms. The meal featured pizza with fresh mushrooms, sliders, and Rotel stuffed mushrooms, showcasing the farm's high-quality produce. Special thanks to Mr. Martin Blair, owner of Underground Forest Farms, for an insightful and tasty experience!
