Highlights from tonight’s Board Meeting included academic and athletic achievements as well as school updates.
Several young ladies were recognized for their exceptional mathematical abilities. The following students achieved All Perfect Math Scores on the ACAP:
Yamilet Galvan, a 7th grader at DMS, who was tested in 6th grade at DMS.
Ava Dussett, a 5th grader at USJ, who was tested in 4th grade at USJ.
Camilla Stokes, a 4th grader at USJ, who was tested in 3rd grade at USJ.
Paisley Lawrence, a 3rd grader at USJ, who was tested in 2nd grade at WES.
One standout individual achievement highlighted from Demopolis High was Charlie Grace Card's perfect score on the reading portion of the ACT.
The DMS Volleyball team had an exceptional season with a 14-1 record. Over the past two years, this team boasts an impressive 25-2 record.
After the recognitions, Principals outlined each school’s Academic and Career Improvement Plans (ACIP’s) emphasizing their commitment to enhancing the educational experience.
During the meeting, the approval of new personnel was announced. DCS would like to welcome Katelyn Lawrence and Jessica Paulk, who have joined Team WES.
Superintendent Tony Willis provided an update during his report:
Pre-ACT tests are scheduled for this week.
ACT Workkeys will take place next week.
Data Days were noted for their positive impact on providing more strategic instruction.
Report cards were distributed last week, and parent meetings are set for Thursday afternoon.
Infrastructure improvements, including Schneider's ongoing work on Phase 1 and the beginning of Phase 2 next week, were discussed.
Grant applications for additional HVAC support were a key focus.
Facility updates, including awaited glass for the entrances at USJ and DHS, were highlighted.
Sports and extracurricular achievements coming up include Cross Country sectionals Nov. 2, VB Area Tournament this Thursday, and the DHS Football team (undefeated in region play) will play for the regional championship Friday against Holtville (also undefeated in region play.)
Recognition was given to the band, cheerleaders, and auxiliary for their Homecoming performances.
Plans for rebidding the track were detailed, with bidding closing on October 25.
Notable local contributions, such as tree removal by Personal Touch and an inflatable helmet from the QB club, were acknowledged.
COTR pageant participants and winners received well-deserved congratulations.
Promotional efforts for the School of Healthcare Science and a feasibility study were mentioned.
The remarkable athletic accomplishment of Miriam Dominguez Tellez, a 2023 graduate, was highlighted for breaking a school record with a 20 minute/20 second 5K at her current junior college.
The meeting concluded with an announcement of the next board meeting scheduled for November 13.
